We have a book!
It felt important to come back to where it all began, and to thank each one of you for reading and sharing my work over the last few years. I would not have been noticed by a publisher, who would then offer me the opportunity to tease out some of the ideas and themes I have discussed here in longer form, were it not for you all. So thank you!
Writing this book has been a labour of love. It seemed impossible at times, but now it is here for all to read, enjoy and, more importantly, critique. It is certainly provocative in places and I hope to have fruitful discussions about its subject matter in the coming weeks and months. Here’s an excerpt from the blurb:
Populist politicians, punting their idea of ‘the people’ as opposed to the elite, have in recent years grown their following by painting the Constitution as an obstacle to true freedom. They have tried to sway judgments using politics both within and outside of the court room. Mafora shows how this happens predictably in the politics cycle as taps start to close on fraud and corruption and the masses turn apathetic in the face of government failure to provide the better life they were promised.
Sophisticated disinformation campaigns . . . are used to sway public opinion. The era of Bell Pottinger is not behind us . . . These campaigns exploit the public’s lack of [constitutional] knowledge and media literacy, and with anti-intellectualism pervading every facet of our society, it has become acceptable to attack our judges and courts to settle political scores.
What does this mean for the future and stability of our democracy and our ability to hold politicians accountable? Mafora illuminates the true dangers of this moment and proposes ways in which we can change course. Before it is too late.
So diarise the date, 29 September 2023. Stay tuned for info about launch dates and a sneak peek at the Table of Contents, soon! :)
